2009 Aerospace Walk of Honor Ceremony
Keynote speaker, former Apollo and Gemini astronaut Gene Cernan, is just one highlight of Lancaster's Aerospace Walk of Honor event. Cernan, who was the last man to walk on the moon, continues to offer inspiration to the nation's youth to reach for the stars.
“I strongly encourage our residents, especially youths, to join us on September 19 and witness this incredible speaker,” said Mayor R. Rex Parris. “This man is part of the fabric of not only American history, but the history of all mankind. He continues to inspire new generations of ambitious men and women by his extraordinary example.”
Five new inductees will be honored Saturday in the Walk's 20th Aniversary edition. With this year's event, the list of local american heros honored will be an even 100.
The ceremony, which is free, will take place at 3 pm on September 19 at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center.
Immediatly following the ceremony a "moon tree" will be planted along the Walk. Seeds carried to the moon on Apollo 14 were brought back and germinated as symbols of mankind's spirit of exploration. Our 2nd generation tree, donated by the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, will stand as a monument not only to the poineers who blazed a trail in space exploration, but as an inspiration to area youth follow in their path.
